Split Pea Soup with Ham

1 1/2 c Split peas; cleaned
1 cn (14 1/2 oz) chicken broth
2 1/2 c Water
1 md Yellow onion; chopped
1 md Carrot; peeled, halved lengthwise, and sliced
1 Stalk celery; thinly sliced, (include leaves)
6 oz Very lean diced ham
1 Bay leaf
1/4 ts Ground black pepper


Combine all ingredients in 3-quart pot, and bring to boil over high heat. Reduce the heat to low, cover, and simmer, stirring occasionally, for about 45 minutes to 1 hour, or until the peas are soft and the liquid is thick.

Serve soup hot.
